The Cougar Rugby Club clinched the SacValley D2 Championship after defeating River City 55-15 this past Saturday.
The club went 4-0, joins Bullard (Central), Berkeley (Redwood), and De La Salle (Bay) as teams that have finished 4-0 and have clinched a conference title.
Bullard has been playing well under new coach Paul Carter. Isaia Kruse has been excellent at scrumhalf and he links nicely with Mike Kruse, his brother, as flyhalf. This is a physical and skilled team, but they’re working hard on rugby skills, too.
De La Salle has continued to produce solid rugby players, and Coach Ed Christiansen mentions that 12 alumni from 2012-2014 are playing DI college rugby. Despite having some players opt to play with other clubs, De La Salle has been able to win their division and are nicely positioned to possibly winning the entire NorCal DII.
It was a tough end to the season for Kennedy, which started the league season 3-0 before being edged by Cougar 38-31.
“We have more players with experience than ever before, including 10 players that started under the instruction of Matt Eason, Rich Boyer and the rest of the Land Park Motley coaches,” said Kennedy’s Bill Allison. “We also have the support of our Varsity Football Head Coach and Athletic Director, Matt Costa, who sees the benefit of rugby for his players. Our new Head Coach, Bo Kaihau and seasoned Backs Coach, Mike McManus have brought a new level of respect and a lot fun back to the team, which inspires the team to succeed.”
