The NCR Women’s D1 league is underway, and that’s a good thing, as the games are (generally) going on and everyone is getting more strong competition and more challenges.
But it’s a work in progress. The challenges of travel meant that we saw a couple of forfeits, which is the complete antithesis of what this league is about. We also have seen a number of blowouts.
Now, fans might have seen this article measuring the women’s competitions around NCR this fall and how there are too many forfeits and too many lopsided (winning margin 50 or more) results.
We can summarize some of this with some total numbers. From 470 or so games scheduled in NCR’s D1AA, D2, and D3, 10.7% saw no score reported, about 15% of the games were forfeits, just over 1% were ties, 7.2% were within a try, and 24% (!) were 50-or-more blowouts.
So our point there was that there are real questions about competitive balance.
We bring these numbers up to compare to the NCR D1, which includes three teams that are planning also to pursue playoffs in the spring under CRAA (which is how this league gets to exist).
Here’s what we have:
12 games
all scores reported
2 (17%) forfeits
4 (33%) blowouts
2 (17%) close games.
It’s a small sample size so really all we can say about this is that the numbers are comparable to the general NCR numbers, with things being a bit closer. If we look at the mid-range competitive games (winning margins of 8-28) we get an overall percentage of 19.2%. For NCR D1, we get only one (8.3%) result in that range.
