Lurking in the West in men’s D2 college rugby has been Colorado Mesa, who this past weekend won big over a very tough Boise State to secure a place in the NCR playoffs.

With Liam Brannan coming in as Head Coach from AIC, the CMU rugby team has blossomed in part because of what happens off the field.

Before coming here I was somewhat aware of what good rugby community looks like outside of practice and games when I was at AIC for the four years,” Brannan told GRR. “I learned a lot of things and lessons from AIC that I have somewhat adapted to make better and use here at CMU. These boys here at CMU are doing things outside of practice—volunteer work or going out and doing team hikes, these guys are more than just teammates. They have become a family.”

This was crucial for Brannan as a new coach to help create a successful team culture.

Then on the field, things changed, too. A new coach brings new tactics, new patterns of play, and that can be an adjustment. The CMU players adjusted well.

“Overall, we’ve been playing as a unit,” said club president and second rower Tom Gauweiler. “It all stems from our mindset of playing for each other and being willing to go one more for the boys. Everything we may lack in size or skill, our team makes up with physicality, effort, and willpower.”

“I think the boys have adapted to this new style and all very quickly and well,” said Brannan. “These boys can gel like no other out on the pitch.”

Central to all of that are three brothers: Heath Norton, Parker Norton, and Josh Norton, who suit up at scrumhalf, flyhalf, and inside center.

“The connection they have is unreal,” said Brannan.

Parker will put in the odd 50-22, as well.

They just control possession very well, added Gauweiler. “With their presence, skill, downfield vision, and strong tackling, they distribute the ball and command the game, and that makes our offense almost unstoppable.”

Up front the tight five of props Elliot Gibbons and Justin Hanssen, with hooker Mike Howard and second rows Gauweiler and Tanner Wrast  setting the tone.

The  front-rowers run hard and “they defend on the line like it’s their own front yard,” said Gauweiler.

Against Boise State and against Montana State the forwards’ ability to control the set piece was a crucial part of them winning.

“Our forwards aren’t all the biggest guys but everyone on the team is physical,” added Brannan. “They are not afraid to drop a shoulder or poach a ball.”

And once they win the ball you’ve got the Norton brothers distributing and the outside backs scoring. Bergen Roth is only a sophomore and he has embraced the structure and plays hard.

All of them are fast and shifty.

Wing Will Schraeder scored a hat trick against Boise State and Roth, wing Declan Coles, and fullback Jack Edwards are just as dangerous. They also play smart defense.

So will that all translate into something big?

They beat Montana State 34-10, Boise State 64-17, and also beat Utah State. They may have not seen some of the major favorites such as IUP or UNC Wilmington, but then again, those teams haven’t seen the Mavericks.

“These boys,” warned Brannan, “are hungry.”
