WWU scrum vs Oregon, fall 2025.
Western Washington's scrum was working well.

It’s early days yet but the NCRC is still a conference that certainly has a different look.

With Central Washington in the league now, the rugby math is going to be a little more difficult. But it’s likely CWU will be a contender. Yes their squad is almost completely changed from their D1A program, but we said almost. Five players remain for their senior year, and they form a core that gets the rest up to speed.

Central beat Oregon 31-21 a week ago, and that was a tough loss for the Ducks. Oregon then faced Western Washington this past weekend, and WWU came away with an impressive shutout, 34-0.

Western Washington was the stronger in both the scrums and the lineouts and as a result had plenty of first-phase ball with which to work.

It was rough weather, too, so that didn’t lend itself to expansive rugby. However, attacking sensation Eli Ashmann did scored three tries for Western as they took a bonus-point victory. Freshman Seamus Twohey impressed with several line breaks and a try. Charlie Despain-Tonjes, a transfer from Central, was solid at flanker, showcased his rugby knowledge, and scored a try.

With that win, Western joins Centra at 1-0.

Oregon State, meanwhile, opened up their account.

No. 8 Kona Figueroa scored a try and was named player of the game. Hooker Ben Nord, captain and center Anton Ojangueren, and prop Jack Vetrone all touched down. Ojangueren added two conversions.
