Navy Impresses in Win Over Army
Navy defeated Army 32-5 in Rugby East action Saturday.
This storied sports rivalry, and a storied rugby rivalry, came to a head Saturday at the Prusmack Rugby Complex in front of a loud and boisterous crowd. Certainly favored, Navy put in what was probably their best performance.
The Midshipmen took an early lead thank to a penalty goal from Roanin Krieger. Scrumhalf Michael Strehle was the man at the back of the maul to provide the first try and Navy continued to hold the momentum.
"We executed better in all areas today," said Navy DOR Gavin Hickie, who was probably nodding toward last week's game against Penn State where Navy didn't connect well in the red zone, especially on attacking lineouts. "We put it together."
Aidan Gerber's try made it 15-0 (with Krieger's conversion) and that's how the first half ended.
Tanner Russell, who has been working his way carefully back from injury, once again provided an impact in the second, and scored his second try in two weeks. That made it 22-0 and then Avion Ganse, who has been electric for Navy, set up Drew Baublitz for Navy's fourth try and, with Krieger's conversion, a 29-0 lead.
Krieger added a penalty before Army was able to punch one in late.
That avoided the shutout, but overall this was an impressive showing from the Rugby East leader.
