U18s
Belmont Shore and Rebel Rugby pretty much dominated their pools in the U18 open bracket. Rebel's defense saw them concede only 17 points. Pioneer was entertaining and worked well together to go 3-0. SacPal Islanders thumped their opposition.
In Pool 5 KC Jr Blues, USA South, and Titan all went 2-1. KC won the tiebreaker (points difference).
In the U18 Elite, new teams Next Phase Rugby surprised many with a 36-7 victory over a very good Atlantis Teal side. Next Phase then almost lost to Washington Academy of Rugby in a weird, back-and-forth game that saw both sides have tries disallowed for an extra movement.
Rebel Rugby Academy looked very polished, beating Atlantis Black and Layton Christian (in a rematch of last year's final) both with shutouts. But San Mateo rolled over them, playing very fast and passing expertly to score five tries to Rebel's one. San Mateo played in a daring way and it worked.
California Grizzlies also looked strong beating Gorilla and Kahuku, only to lose to Rebel Rugby Black 22-12 on the final game of the day. That result jumped the Rebel Black team into the quarterfinals, and bumped WAR out.
Atlantis Teal went on to win their final two to make the quarters. Two of the pools saw three teams with 2-1 records. All of those teams made the quarters. The Grizzlies will have a chance to get revenge over Rebel Black as they play again Saturday morning.
So the quarterfinal matchups are:
Next Phase Rugby vs Layton Christian
Atlantis Teal vs San Mateo
Rebel Rugby Academy Elite vs Kahuku
California Grizzlies vs Rebel Rugby Academy Black
