Mountain View Keeps Winning in Idaho
Mountain View continued its strong run in Idaho building on their 2014 state championship.
The single-school team is 3-0 in league play and defeated touring Bishop O’Dowd of Northern California 43-23 Thursday night.
Head Coach Hamish Bell said the program continues to build since he pushed for the move from multi-school to single-school status a few years ago.
“We were fortunate in that we had a lot of young players, so we started with them and I thought it would help us within the school, which it did. Everyone is behind rugby now. The athletic director’s office is very supportive, and we’re playing well, also.”
This was shown Thursday as Mountain View was led by No. 8 Kody Walker, who has been with the program since he was playing U14s. The No. 8 is a big, strong, fast athlete.
“We’ve everything you want in a player and a smart kid,” said Bell.
Stalwart up front was Griffin Moeser, a 6-5 lock who was a force in the rucks.
“He has good aggression and just loves rucking,” said Bell. Moeser also led the defensive effort for Mountain View, while sophomore flyhalf Cody Hersey continues to learn and understand the game and does a good job of mixing passes to his forwards and to his backs.
Up ahead for Mountain View now is a late april clash with their main rivals, Capital HS. That game will likely harbinger who will take state this year.
