The Mira Costa Mustangs capped off a perfect season, winning the Southern California Boys Varsity White Division with a 46-29 decision over St. John Bosco.
The Mustangs had run roughshod through the league and playoffs, but came into the final a little worried, as they were without their normal starting midfield.
“Looking at St. John Bosco on film I was very worried,” said Mira Costa Coach Duke Dulgarian. “They were very big in the backs and had athletic forwards. I saw what they did to University City. So we were worried.”
But Mira Costa’s forwards, led by Payer of the Week Justin Johnson, were quick to the breakdown and showed plenty of bravery in contact.
“We spent the entire week on fitness and ball handling and did no contact,” said Dulgarian. “It was a way to rest them and maybe have them keep that feel for the contact in the game. And they had it.”
Hitting hard, Mira Costa spread the ball and scored seven tries from six different players. Jonah Tavai was monstrous, and the sophomore has quickly become a leader for the team.
“That kid is the most humble kid,” said Dulgarian. “He picks players up, and he’s so positive all the time.”
The win caps off an impressive championship run for Mira Costa. In league play, the Mustangs finished the regular season 6-0, and then got through the quarterfinals and semifinals against Alta Vista and Rancho Bernardo with a combined score of 90-12.
