With the results in Men's D2 college we have a better idea of where we are on the playoff picture.

Cornell wrapped up an undefeated conference season, going 8-0, including semis and final, as they beat RPI in the Liberty D2 championship match.

This has been a pretty dominant performance by Cornell, who in a way came out of nowhere. RPI competed well but will miss out on a playoff spot.

Cornell's defense has been unflinching all season and this game was no different as they held the Engineers to just the one try in winning 33-8.

The big surprise was Chicago beating Northern Iowa 38-15 to take the #1 seed out of the Great Midwest.

Loyola won over Northwestern 35-27 to take the #3.

"The difference for us was relentless defense," said UChicago Rugby club president Mateo Rampaldi. "We knew this was an opportunity that we've never had, so we trusted each other and put our bodies on the line for the full 80 minutes."

Jose Alzugaray and Jack Allison were outstanding on D and set the tone for the entire team.

With a smart offensive game plan they put the game away.

"We just stuck to what we know and didn't panic if plays didn't got exactly how we wanted them," said Rampaldi.

Benedictine lost to John Brown earlier in the season but turned that around in the final. We have to say that was less of a surprise as Benedictine has been improving rapidly.

Memphis beat Tennessee team to take SCRC, and Scranton edged Salisbury in the MARC final.

Scranton battled through to a 23-20 win over Salisbury, and they won the MARC Conference after an earlier-season loss to Towson, which they avenged, and then beating a team(the Sharks) that had beaten Towson.

"I think while we have a younger team we have seen the experience and maturity level increase with each match," said Head Coach Quinn Conaboy. "The boys are patient and handling chaos on the field well. I think being comfortable with our players, skills and versatility plays a big part of our successes following a tough Week 1 loss to Towson. "

Ryan Whimer came to Scranton out of St. Joe's Prep, where he was flyhalf, and has slotted in nicely at scrumhal, getting MVP for the MARC playoffs. Conaboy praised his maturity and versatility. Sophomore lock Shane Rowland put in a massive, 80-minute shift, using his size and strength throughout.

At No. 8 Ant Viola was a menace at the breakdown and poached the ball or forced holding-on penalties or simply forced Salisbury to commit more resources to their rucks. That made it easier to run the defense.

And prop Liam Morrissey returned from injury to make ground gains in the middle.

Overall, said Conaboy, "the defensive effort by our entire team was impressive and made it hard for Salisbury to break gain line. Patience and confidence on goal line stances paid off and was able to hold the line a couple different times against the hard-running Salisbury team."

Salisbury still gets a bid to the national tournament, as does the #3 team from the MARC, Villanova.

Conference championships, one could argue, deserve a bit more benefit than a team that did not win a conference.

Colorado Mesa won big over a good Boise State side 61-14 to secure the High Peaks championship. Mesa has been going from strength to strength this season.

And on Sunday, Vermont produced a virtual repeat of their win over Norwich a week ago, beating the Cadets 43-10 a week after beating them 42-12, to secure the top spot in the NACR. Norwich moves on, too, but this was a clinical showing from Vermont.
