MARC D2: Key Wins for Villanova, Georgetown
Villanova moved to 3-0 in the Mid-Atlantic D2 East league after a 32-12 victory over Drexel.
The game was played in the middle of Villanova's fall break and the Wildcats were without five first-side players, including three inside backs. But they fronted up well enough.
There were, and are, no excuses as we do have some pretty good depth," said Head Coach Steve Green. "The players have bought into 'the next man up' mentality."
Villanova was led by No. 8 and leading scorer Matt Raine, who is a handful with ball in hand, and got a nice performance from Jonathan Forbes, normally a wing but who moved to center and still some space to run.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was lock Alex Telmo, who started his first A-side match, and that was only his third game ever. Telmo knew at least how to challenge defenders. He ran very well with the ball and consistently maid the gain line. He was also a powerful tackler on defense.
So that's Villanova. Georgetown is leading the Potomac Conference with a 5-0 record after a 69-15 defeat of Mount St. Mary's C side. Captain and flyhalf Mark Kearney scored seven (that's right, seven) tries in the game, accounting for more than half his side's points on his own. Quinn Zebrowski kept up his series of solid performances in at outside center with two more tries. Tighthead prop Patrick Milito was named player of the game.
This has been a good season for Georgetown and the team has some serious goals and is looking at a serious national playoff charge.
They'll probably have to get through Villanova, but Bucknell, idle this weekend, is a contender too.
