Lee Left Out of Playoffs
The South Independent conference (SIRC) was waiting on one game before locking down the DI and DII women’s college title-seekers: Lee University vs. Georgia. The former is the traditional power in the region, making several appearances at DII nationals and sending players into the age grade pools. The latter was a DI team until this season. In 2014, UGA finished 3-3 in the SIRC DI but dropped to DII for 2015.
It was a high stakes game, with the victor advancing to the semifinals, and UGA prevailed 38-17.
“UGA were better than us,” Lee coach Dr. Michael Freak stated. “We played well in patches but failed to keep the pressure on by missing penalty kicks to touch, spilling the ball in contact, and getting run out into touch. … They beat us with speed in the backs – our inside defense gave them too much space to cut back through, and then in the second half they beat us on the outside.
“It’s disappointing to exit so early,” Freake added. “Next year will be interesting. I am graduating quite a few players, but it looks like we will be getting a good group of quality high school players at last.”
Georgia takes the North #2 seed into the semifinals and will play South #1 Alabama (4-0) this weekend. On the other side of the bracket, North #1 UT Chattanooga (3-0-1) will play South #2 Emory (3-1), which is hosting the DII playoffs.
Division I will convene at Life University in Marietta, Ga. The only change to the previously reported match-ups relates to Georgia Tech, which withdrew due to lack of numbers. Florida State is taking over the vacated #4 seed and will play host Life at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Central Florida (#2) and Florida (#3) will play at 1:00 p.m. The final will be contested at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
