Lassiter Trojans Make Move in Georgia
Coming off of a victory against the 1st place Phoenix, the Trojans were eager to avenge an early season loss to the Titans in Rugby Georgia Boys HS league play.
The winner of this match would all but secure 2nd place in the regular season standings with a slim chance to catch the Phoenix for the regular season crown.
Trojans flyhalf Freddie Purdy took up where he left off two weeks ago and converted two straight penalty kicks for an early 6-0 lead. Speedy first-year winger DeVonte’ Swann recovered a Purdy clearing kick downfield, broke through three Titan defenders, and raced 30 meters for the initial try of the match and an 11-0 Trojans lead. The Trojans remained in control as junior prop Mohammed Abdullah took the ball in from five meters out to give the visitors for an 18-0 advantage.
Purdy was then sent off for 10 minutes thanks to a yellow card, however the Titans could not score when they had the man advantage. Driving deep into Trojans territory they were stopped repeatedly by a stifling Lassiter defense. After a clearing kick by captain Shea O’Hanlon, wing Nick Washington raced 40 meters for what appeared to be a short-handed try, but the score was called back and a 5-meter scrum ensued. Lassiter senior No. 8 Colin Cooper took the ball off the scrum and was in to give the visitors a 25-0 lead. Before the half Abdullah scored his second try of the match and the teams went into the break with Lassiter leading 32-0.
Unlike the match earlier in the season that saw the Titans make a remarkable second-half comeback for the upset, that would not be the case this time. The Trojans Matt Slone broke through the Titans backline to give his team a 39-0 lead (conversion successful). Purdy successfully converted his 3rd penalty kick of the match, the result of a high tackle on Abdullah, as he was going for a possible hat trick try. The Titans were able to score midway through the 2nd half prior to the match being called early by the official. The final score, Trojans 42 – Titans 7.
Idle this weekend, Phoenix slammed the Barbarians 87-0 last week, and still lead the league.
