In an early clash of two of the stronger teams in Louisiana went the way of the Jesuit Blue Jays Saturday.

Jesuit New Orleans edged the NOLA Barbarians 14-10. Both teams went into the game 1-0 after wins over Captain Shreve last weekend.

It promised to be a tough game for Jesuit as they lost three starters to a mandatory student retreat. However, in a very well-played game, the Blue Jays held on. Wing Jacob Whitlow scored a try off a long miss pass from flyhalf Case Ellis. Center Matt Palmer set up that play with a long break. Palmer then got a try of his own, running in support of lock Josh Gaspard, who broke through for 45 meters and then offloaded to his teammate.

The Barbarians powered through for a try up the middle from No. 8 Nick Moffatt, and added a conversion and a penalty goal from Drake Roethele, and it was 14-10 at halftime.

The defenses were stout in the second period, and neither team was able to score.

Barbarians Head Coach Matt Austin called it the best high school rugby game he'd ever seen.

In other Rugby Louisiana action, Brother Martin opened their account with a 40-12 win over Captain Shreve in Shreveport.
