Iowa Girls 7s Fall Kicks Off With Four Teams On Fire

Cedar Falls girls team up in a preseason photo. They started the season 2-0.

Iowa opened its girls 7s season Monday with 13 games on the slate.

All 13 teams played two games, which is actually very difficult to schedule. How they did it was to have four teams at one venue, with half the teams playing the other half, and then the same thing at another venue. Then they put the remaining five teams at another venue, and if you think about it, a full round-robin for five teams give everyone four games. So you just cut the round robin in half.

It was masterfully done.

After the dust settled, Southeast Polk, Norwalk, Cedar Falls, and Central Springs all finished the day 2-0.

Norwalk beat North Polk 21-0 and West Des Moines 31-5, with captain Morgan Roth leading the scoring with Four tries and six conversions for 32 points over the two games. SE Polk beat WDM and NP by larger scores and their defense and constant pressure were outstanding—zero points allowed.

Cedar Falls beat a tough Waverly Shell Rock 33-14 and won big over Mason City 55-0. Mattie Dieken’s goalkicking was consistent and she slotted nine conversions and totaled 23 points on the day. Macie Graves scored three tries while Emma Jacobs logged four.

Central Springs was the only team out of the five-team tournament that won both games. They held off Fort Dodge 24-14 and beat Des Moines Roosevelt 36-10. The triumvirate of Mya Howes, Zaila Dahlstrom, and co-captain Payten Kruger were huge on the scoresheet. Howes scored three tries over the two games and converted five for 20 points. Dahlstrom scored three tries, and Kruger added two.

Next up, next Monday the teams are back at it. We get to see SE Polk vs Norwalk and Cedar Falls play Central Springs.
