Ignatius Rolls at Dwenger Invitational
St. Ignatius put Bishop Dwenger to the sword in a non-conference cross-border match Sunday, winning 53-7 on a very windy day in Indiana.
The Cleveland-area SIHS team defended well and controlled field position in excellent fashion in a game where lineouts and kicking for goal were not a good idea given the breeze.
Ignatius was led by flyhalf Bobby Voth, who put Dwenger under constant pressure with his kicking from hand, Jack Howarth, who led the defense, and the explosive Marty Lenehan, who, said Head Coach Dan Arbeznik, "brought the emotional boost for the guys."
But most of all, the result was on the backs of the second row of Sean Ward and John Reddy, who continually pushed Dwenger back with powerful carries.
"The kids have matured as a unit," said Arbeznik, who returned almost all of the starters from last year's national championship runners-up. "Our kids did well to adjust to the conditions, keeping ball in hand in the first half and putting the ball up high in the second. Even in the lineout they got crafty to find ways to win ball."
Next up for St. Ignatius will be a doubleheader weekend in West Virginia with Gonzaga and Fort Hunt. After that they are off for a tour of France.
This game was part of a Bishop Dwenger Invitational which also saw JV and freshman games. Here are the scores:
Carroll 14-12 St. Ignatius C
Dwenger B 31-24 St. Ignatius Sophomores
Dwenger 7-53 St. Ignatius
Pendleton B 12-36 St. Ignatius Freshmen
Pendeleton 36-19 St. Ignatius B
