HTH, San Pasqual, Torrey Pines Find Non League Wins
Several non-league games were held in the Southern California Boys HS divisions as the teams look to get back into league play Jan 9.
HTH/Point Loma won again. After winning their first two league games by wide margins, they dispatched Palos Verdes of the Los Angeles division 47-7. Meanwhile, San Pasqual is also 2-0 in the Varsity White San Diego Division, and won a non-league game against Tesoro 37-12. San Pasqual rode a strong forward pack to win their game - they have experience up front and have utilized a lot of pick-and-goes and inside balls to get go-forward. With captain and front-rower Sergio Rangel powering through and freshman No. 8 Connor Contreras turning heads and scoring some tries, they are nicely set up for the clash with HTH this coming weekend.
“We’ve got a lot of youngsters, but we have a lot of good youngsters, and HTH should be a really good game, probably our toughest so far,” said San Pasqual Head Coach Ray Steel.
Meanwhile, among the Varsity Red teams, Torrey Pines High School beat San Diego Varsity White team Mission Vista High School 66-17 in a non-league game. Ryan Cavanaugh starred for Torrey Pines at flyhalf, setting up four tries and scoring one. He directed the flow of the offense, and distributed very well.
"This group has big play potential from a lot of different angles, but needs to work on eliminating mistakes to be the team they can be,” said Torrey Pines Head Coach Matty Sandoval. “At least they are learning the name of the game is support, and they backed each other up much better today."
Hooker Omar Rodriquez set the pace for the forwards.
