HSAA Garner Respect, But Wins Elusive Day Two

The USA High School All Americans lost both of their games on Day Two of the World School 7s to finish up tied for 7th.

The losses weren't big ones. They lost to Fiji New Zealand 12-7 on the final play of the game, and then came back from a 14-0 deficit against Fiji to lose 14-10. Over the entire weekend the HSAA team had four close games, winning one and losing three, scoring six tries in those games and giving up eight. In the other game, they outscored Indigenous Australia five tries to zero.

In the Cup Quarterfinal against Fiji, the Americans scored a well-taken early try through Tohi Angilau but kind of sat on that lead and allowed little errors to creep in. Had they moved the ball with more alacrity as they did against Indigenous Australia on Friday, they might have scored again. As it was, they gave up a try with a minute to go, and then an error and two penalties allowed Fiji to score in the corner with no time left.

With a couple of players unable to play in the Plate Semi because of injury, the HSAA team struggled early. But tries from Colin Turner and Lucas Lacamp brought them within a try. Fiji closed it out 14-10.

Overall, still, this trip showed that America kids can play with anyone. They faded just a bit later in the tournament, and as a result their pattern suffered a little also, but on balance this was a successful trip for a team that could have easily lost every game, and instead won a ton of respect.
