In what was a surprisingly close match, BYU scored at the end of the game to edge Grand Canyon 29-26 Saturday in Phoenix.

This was a much improved showing for GCU and they were in position to win the game.

"It was a heartbreaking result," said Grand Canyon Head Coach Sean O'Leary. "But our response to a lackluster performance against Saint Mary's showed the players the intensity needed at this level, and the fact that they can play it this level."

O'Leary praised his team's energy, passion, teamwork, and discpline.

"So very, very proud," he added. "This is the best performance, by far, since I've been here."

Several starters against Saint Mary's were on the sideline against Arizona State last week and that perhaps lit a fite under them.

GCU No. 8 Vince McKeffery soared in for a try at 79 minutes to put Grand Canyon ahead only for Ryan Larsen to score for BYU to win the game moments later.

BYU was led by James Tenney, who was outstanding, but overall Head Coach Steve St. Pierre saw much to improve on.

"We made things way too hard on ourselves and Grand Canyon capitalized on our mistakes," said the St. Pierre. "We just need to execute the basic things at a much higher level and not put ourselves under so much pressure.

The two teams agreed, however, that this is a very good fixture for both and especially in that BYU can take advantage of the warm Arizona weather to get on the field inJanuary. The Cougars are in the middle of Utah winter, so getting out on the field outdoors was a nice change for them.
