GCU Can Make a Move v CSULB in Gold Coast
A big game looms in the Gold Coast Conference in Men's DIAA college action this weekend.
Grand Canyon, which leads the conference with a 2-0 record, visits defending conference champs Cal State Long Beach. Neither team got what they wanted last weekend, as Long Beach's game was rained out, and GCU got a forfeit from Azusa Pacific. Both would like to have played.
While scouting reports indicate CSULB might be vulnerable this year, GCU Head Coach Ryan Kelly isn't counting his chickens.
"We are looking at Saturday’s match as one of the key matchups of the season for us," said Kelly. "Long Beach State defeated several D1A teams in the fall tournament season and has consistently proven to be a tough competitor. We know they will be ready to play."
Despite being without freshman flyhalf Brendon Curle, who had an excellent fall, other newcomers have showed well, including Avery Longrie, Roddy Hamilton, Clayton Castro, and Chris Cheers. Darien Pickett continues to player well, bringing an unorthodox style to his game, but showing good running lines and great agility for a 240-pounder.
With a win, Grand Canyon could take early control of the conference, but there's still much rugby to play.
