Gamebreakers in HS Rugby This Week
Gamebreakers in HS Rugby This Week
We took a week away from the Gamebreakers as Spring Break cut back the number of games, but we've now got two weeks (albeit small weeks) of action to recognize.
Here are our Gamebreakers for the end of March and the beginning of April.
Ryan Williams, Atlas Faafetai, and Brendan Amatu, Alaska Youth Rugby
The three produced some key defensive plays and sparked a comeback to overhaul Maui in the Cup Final of the Boys U18 bracket at the Tropical 7s.
Although the Cup is the consolation trophy (as opposed to the Championship), this was an impressive showing from Alaska as they finished the event 4-1-1.
Bennett Bodenhammer, St. Thomas Aquinas
The Aquinas fullback was very good on covering kicks and was some key defensive and offensive plays against the Kansas City Jr. Blues. His efforts earned him player of the game honors.
Marty Lenehan, St. Ignatius
As loathe as we are to honor a player twice in a short period of time, Lenehan gave us no choice as he scored three tries to pace his side to a 19-0 lead over St. Edward. Ignatius held on 24-12.
Kealan O'Connell, Rebel Rugby
The SFGG product produced an excellent effort for Rebel Rugby as they won the Tropical 7s U18 Championship. His ability to identify and exploit space was superb.
Joseph Coscia, Aspetuck
The powerful Aspetuck prop paced his team’s round-robin wins a week before and then was a massive part of Aspetuck’s win over Staples.
Willie Leota, Genesis
Scoring tries, finding space for his teammates, and running the attack, senior flyhalf Leota was everywhere helping Genesis to a victory over the SLV Rhinos.
Joe Klaasen, Kingfishers
The Kingfishers wing scored three tries in his team’s win over the KC Jr Blues.
Nick Eaton, Ankeny
Eaton scored three tries in two games for Ankeny as they started 2-0 in Iowa's 7s league. A powerful runner who has worked hard to improve his game, Eaton is equally at home as a 7s forward or an interior back, and he seems to do just fine in either role.
Joe Fabini, Bishop Dwenger
In Dwenger’s victory over Penn HS a week before, Joe Fabini scored two of his team’s three tries.
Joseph Kerstiens and Jacob Landry, Gregory the Great
The two flankers did all the unglamorous work throughout their team’s defeat of St. Joseph’s Prep. They made tackles, fund yardage in tight, won rucks and won ball.
Patrick McHale, Georgetown
McHale helped the Georgetown Prep backs find space in their opening game win over Salesianum, and he added nine points with a try and two conversions.
Sy Mendenhall, Jesuit Dallas
The Rangers’ captain scored two tries in a tight 28-20 win over Allen.
Daniel Helton, Harpeth Harlequins
The Harlequins No. 8 led a powerful forward attack and paced his side to a win over Spring Hill in Tennessee.
John Authement, Brother Martin
the prop scored the try that ensured a key league victory over New Orleans Jesuit.
