Gamebreakers - HS Boys This Week
As the Boys HS season spreads out into more states, our Gamebreakers columns does, too.
Here are some players who enjoyed big games and big players around the USA:
Josh Herring
The flanker from the Tucson Blackbirds wasn’t sure about rugby the first time he tried it, but as a senior he is, as his coach described, “a lightning bolt.” He has helped the Blackbird to a 3-0 record.
Chris Bagby
The Phoenix center caused all sorts of issues for the rival Trojans in Georgia HS league play, setting up tries and keeping the Trojans on their heels in a 24-5 victory for Phoenix.
Riley Bishop
The shifty, skilled St. Thomas (Houston) flyhalf ran by tacklers, set up scorers, scored himself, and was a perfect 4-for-4 as a kicker in his team’s 28-3 defeat of St. Piux X.
Justin Johnson
The Mira Costa lock forward had to move to No. 8 because of a player unavailability, and he played an even bigger role than usual for the Mustangs as they won their SoCal playoff game.
Nathan Lovato
Lovato was a savvy and intelligent head in the backs for Rancho Bernardo as they defeated Citrus Valley in the SoCal Varsity White quarterfinals.
Blake Richards-Smith
The Torrey Pines lock dominated the lineouts and scored the winning try for his team as they beat rivals Cathedral Catholic 25-21 in a crucial Varsity Red conference game.
Carlos Robins and Brandon Cole
In a crazy playoff game that ended in a tie, Robins, fullback for View Park Prep, and Cole, No. 8 for University City, put on a show. Both scored twice, and bott were hugely influential. Robins was very fast, and elusive, while Cole was all power and toughness, and yet both were important to their team’s fortunes.
Avery Crouch
In a tense encounter between Greenville HS and Chapin in South Carolina, Crouch was player of the game in helping Greenville eke out a 7-5 win.
Kevin Saunders
The Danville Oaks scrumhalf has moved from inside center and his understanding of the game and how the offense flows has blossomed. He led the Oaks to an opening-week win over Mother Lode.
Jay Reilly Kight
Kight scored two tries for Westlake as the defending Texas state champs beat Allen.
Joshua Kauvesi
Kauvesi helped spark Elsie Allen to a big 20-5 win over Bishop O’Down in Northern California DII action, scoring two tries.
