Furman Turns Heads with Tie of IU
Furman University logged a notable result Saturday in a non-conference game, as the DII program tied top DI team Indiana 41-41.
The game was a scrimmage and both teams subbed liberally, but this same meeting two years ago resulted in an 88-5 result for IU. So the improvement, following on a Furman victory over a University of South Carolina squad, is noticeable.
“While this was a tie on the scoreboard, it represents a huge win for our program,” said Furman Coach John Roberts. “It was a testament to our growth over the last three years. We were honored to host Indiana today.”
Furman trailed the Hoosiers 41-17 at halftime, but made some defensive adjustments at the break that turned their fortunes around.
Furman junior Adam Miller intercepted a wayward Hoosier pass with three minutes remaining and raced 50 meters to tie the game after a successful conversion by Jacob Milchuck.
In the game’s final moments, Furman weathered a frenzied Hoosier attempt to score. Indiana, playing on the Furman five-meter line, plunged several players into the Furman defense but were turned away by a determined Paladin team.
Josh Hager, Jacob Milchuck, RJ Bradley, Adrian Marcogliese, Hunter Branch and Miller all scored for Furman.
“We gave them a good run and it was great stepping stone for us,” added Roberts. “I think they were surprised by our physical play and athletes.”
Non-league games between divisions can mean much, or very little, but Indiana’s depth and quality is undeniable, and for Furman to stay with IU, as a DII program, is impressive.
