Frostbite 7s Headline Big Early Weekend in College 7s
The Frostbite Tournament headlines a relatively busy weekend in collegiate 7s as February comes to a close.
The slowly expanding college 7s season sees three events in warm-weather locales, and one that admits it is most definitely not.

Landisville, Pa. hosts a multi-bracket tournament in chilly Pennsylvania (the forecast is for a high of 30 degrees Fahrenheit and windy). The tournament hosts 24 men's teams in three brackets and 16 women's in two brackets.
The top men's bracket includes teams with a history of success in 7s such as Kutztown, Delaware, and AIC. Chasing them is varsity Liberty Conference program Nazareth, and accomplished DIAA and DII programs such as Pitt, SUNY Cortland, Temple, and IUP. Is this Kutztown's top side? Why do we ask? See below.
The 2nd bracket is more centered around DII teams and the B sides from teams in the top bracket. Keep an eye on Marywood there. The third bracket is a small-college bracket with NCR champs Christendom heading a solid group of eight.
For the women, NIRA DII champs AIC head the list and really it'll be interesting to see if anyone can catch them.
Chesapeake Conference
Already into its second week, the Chesapeake Conference series moves to the campus of the University of Maryland. There Mary Washington will look to follow on from their win last week. Mount St. Mary's did push UMW and is there again, as is Virginia Tech. And ... Kutztown has two teams in this tournament, making it three teams in action from KU.
See the list of the pools above left.
Kutztown's team at Frostbite is a developmental team while the Bears have taken their most experienced 24 or so 7s players and mixed them up for two teams playing in Maryland. KU will leave about seven players at home due to injuries, so this is really a chance for some players to make an impact.
Southern Conference
The SoCon series has its second tournament and while the first one was an open tournament with several DI teams, this version, in Wilmington, NC, is a full-on DII/small college event.
Pool A | Pool B | Pool C | Pool D |
Wake Forest | Furman | Charlotte | App St |
Coastal Carolina | College of Charleston | UNC Wilmington | Citadel |
Elon | Lander | Duke | ECU |
Wingate | WCU | UNC Chapel Hill | Belmont Abbey |
Some tough pools here, with Pool C (UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Wilmington) bringing plenty of 7s pedigree there, and in Pool D a varsity Belmont Abbey with a ton of potential and a Citadel team that lost the last final by only two points.
Dixie Cup 7s
The University of Alabama hosts the opening tournament for a bunch of teams in the SCRC with a couple from outside the conference. University of Kentucky, which won last week's first SoCon tournament, fields two teams in this event as do the hosts, Alabama. South Carolina, which took 3rd in the SoCon opener, will be there with two teams, while Mississippi State, Auburn, West Virginia, and Alabama-Birmingham will all field one.
