Fort Hunt Looks Solid in Win Over Gregory the Great
Fort Hunt opened their account for the 2022 season with a well-taken 47-17 victory over Gregory the Great Academy.
While both of these teams are fairly prominent and are high in the GRR rankings, this was the first run-out for both, so a little rustiness was expected.
However, GGA, the defending RugbyPA champs, showed well, played a pretty cohesive brand of rugby, and kept at it against a bigger and very athletic Fort Hunt team. Fort Hunt also ran out two JV squads, playing GGA's JVs and also the Vienna HS JVs.
"I am so impressed with that school," said Fort Hunt Head Coach Dale Roach. "They play really good rugby and they stayed at it."
The Fort Hunt forwards set an excellent platform on the day.
"Our forwards are usually pretty good and they're good again this year," said Roach, ominously. "It's a mobile, and big, pack."
With the Warriors' midfield running well and cutting through the set up strike runners to score, Fort Hunt was able to turn possession into tries. And scrumhalf Brody Johnson, who started every game last year as a freshman, was outstanding again running the tempoe.
This is the first of a long series of tough games for Fort Hunt.
"We thought last year we didn't do enough in the season before nationals—it was such a short season last year and really everybody had that problem," said Roach. "This year we've started playing early and we have such a good schedule."
Twice Fort Hunt will play a curtain-raiser for Major League Rugby games, playing Aspetuck to open for a Rugby New York game, and playing Charlotte to open for DC Old Glory."
"It's pick your poison," laughed Roach.
