Florida State Wins Key Game in Florida DIAA League
Florida State rolled past Central Florida in fine style over the weekend to take a measure of control in Florida's DIAA league.
FSU has gone 3-0 while seeing 30 different players find game time with the first side. Of the 41 points FSU scored, 36 were by freshmen. Wing Maxwell Larson got 14 from a try, a penalty goal, and three conversions before yielding to a replacement with 12 minutes to go. Flanker Jonathan O'Keeffe continued his strong run of form with three tries. Still, it wasn't until just before halftime that the Seminoles had the lead for good. FSU was trailing 14-8 when O'Keeffe scored his first and Larson converted to nudge Florida State ahead 15-14 at the break.
And then 26 unanswered points in the second period put the game away.
Florida Atlantic kept pace somewhat with a nervy 19-13 win over North Florida. Peter Laurence's 32nd-minute try and a penalty goal by Alexander de Montes on the stroke of halftime established a lead of 11-3, and really it was just a case of holding on. North Florida scored well past full time to get closer and log a close-loss bonus point.
Next week, FSU takes on a somewhat hard-luck Florida team. The Gators are 0-2 but have garnered bonus points for four tries and for close losses each game.
