Florida State Secures #1 Seed in Florida DIAA
Florida State is now 6-0 in Florida's DIAA league after an impressive 27-0 shutout of North Florida on Saturday.
With the win, FSU takes 1st in the regular season in the league, bypassing idle Central Florida, who sit at 5-1.
Florida International defeated Florida Atlantic 25-22 to join North Florida at 3-3, and, by our calculations, earned a bonus point for four tries to tie North Florida at 16 standings points. However, the first tiebreaker for Florida's league is whether a team has forfeited a game, and FIU has a forfeit on their record, so they are, by our count, 4th.
Florida State's defense has been excellent, holding opponents to just 79 points in six games, and shutting out UNF.
Playing on a beautiful spring day and Florida State was hot from the start. The Seminoles scored off a lineout in the second minute to spin it wide to speedy freshman wing Ilan Egosi for his 4th try of the season. North Florida put some pressure on the camped out in the Florida State 22 for some time before a penalty allowed the Seminoles to get clear. Freshman center Daniel Cary then found Angus Kelly in space and he went over.
Max Larson hit a 50-meter penalty goal to make it 15-0 at halftime. Senior captain Kiaran O'Keeffe sliced through the line, set up by Ryan Falzoi, to score within five minutes of the second half. With Ethan Frisch and Alex Kurleman busting through the line FSU kept up the pressure. While North Florida came close to scoring on several occasions but couldn't quite finish it off. Part of that was because Benz Celestin was excellent in getting hands on UNF ball to draw penalties and relieve pressure. FSU was finally able to put on sustained pressure. North Florida got a yellow card for multiple infringements, and Jack O'Keeffe charged through a wall of defenders to offload to Max Larson on the wing.
Next up then is a bye in the playoffs for Florida State, while the remaining six teams play-off April 2 to decide the remaining three semifinalists.
Larson ended the season as the league's top points-scorer with 66, while Central Florida's Michael MacNeil led the league in tries with 10.
