Florida HS Season Opens Up With Close Games
Jacksonville opened up the Florida HS season with an impressive 15-5 win over the Naples Hammerheads Saturday in what is a tight league in the Sunshine State.
Prop Chris Wilson produced perhaps the play of the day with a 50-meter charge for a try. The 6-3, 230 front-rower was also a force on defense. Flanker Aaron Faison showed his astounding pace and he scored a key try in the second half. But the Naples defense was strong, and in fact became the first team to prevent Wolverine back Ellis Davis from scoring a try.
It was a cold, wet day and both teams had trouble with ball-handling. In a game that saw the teams change ends 0-0, "we knew it would be a fight," said Jacksonville Head Coach Aaron Church. " We just had to clean up mistakes and play the game plan. The players showed their grit and focused."
Flyhalf Jackson Chastain had a big day in a game where points were at a premium. He converted a try and kicked a penalty and showed poise and leadership. Ethan Findley and Adrian Walker logged key minutes, especially on defense, coming off the bench.
"I am pleased with the effort and heart," said Church. "Much more to work on. We aren't looking past any team this year and we know we need to keep getting better each week."
Also in Florida, Okapi and Boca Raton tied 17-17 and Key Biscayne held off Wellington 22-10 in what is clearly a very competitive competition in Florida.
