FAU, USF Still Unbeaten In Florida DIAA
Florida Atlantic moved to 6-0 in the Florida DIAA Conference with a 27-12 defeat of Florida International. Spencer Gray’s goalkicking was a key part of FAU’s charge, as he picked them up after a slow start with two key penalty goals in the second half, and 12 points in total.
Fullback Gerson German got to FAU on the board just before halftime with a try, which Gray converted. With the game in the balance, FAU finished the stronger with center Shemar Green and prop Edward Koor scoring in the final ten minutes to make it 27-12.
In a clash of 4-1 Central Florida and 5-0 South Florida, USF came out on top thanks to three tries in the final 11 minutes.
The teams were very well matched and traded tries throughout the first half. Down 17-12, UCF pressured South Florida into a penalty try just at the stroke of halftime, putting the Knights up 19-17.
Central followed that up with another try for a 24-17 lead. But No. 8 Matthew Bradley’s try at 62 minutes tied it up (with Jordan Haggard’s conversion). To add insult to injury, UCF got a yellow card, as well, and USF took advantage.
A man up, South Florida put prop Sean Johnson and then wing Michael Burrell over for tries. Haggard converted both. What was a nailbiter was suddenly 38-24 USF. Hooker Armon Kashanian iced it three minutes later.
The entire USF front row scored as tighthead Justin Osagie notched a try in the first half. Burrell scored two on the day, and center Jon Salani also touched down in a game that kept USF undefeated at 6-0.
Florida State, meanwhile, improved to 3-2 with a rater difficult 26-19 defeat of 2-3 North Florida. That threw Florida State clearly into 2nd in the North Division with a 4-2 record, 10 standings points behind South Florida.
Central Florida, now 4-2, remains in 2nd in the South behind FAU.
There are five more rounds to go.
