Fairfield Prep Impressive in Win Over Staples
Fairfield Prep defeated Staples 43-14 in midweek Connecticut action.
Staples would kick off with a massively high kick from Eoin Cuddy, who would use the boot all day to try to play territory against Prep, and whose restarts are elite level. Staples would retain several of their restarts.
Staples pressed but a ripped ball from Brice Muller ended up in the hands of Matt Mancini, who took off from inside his own 22 to score the opening try before three minutes were up. Prep would score again through Langis from a physical run through multiple defenders.
The remainder of the first half saw an aggressive Prep penalized frequently and as a result spent plenty of time defending. Staples eventually punished that indiscipline with a try.
Prep replied with a try from Muller and another from Mancini. Vittoria converted three of those four Fairfield Prep tries for a 26-7 lead.
The second half saw Staples use every tool in their toolbox against a staunch Prep defense. Once again Prep absorbed the pressure and flipped the table, with Emmet Derby touching down on a Prep overload to open the scoring. Derby found more space, this time with a kick into the Staples 22, and Jackson Hicks won the race to touch it down in the corner.
George Cippolaro added try on another overload, And while Staples did score on a well-taken try later in the half, it was Fairfield Prep's day. Prep also won the D2 league game and the freshman matchup.
