EIRA U17s Complete BC Sweep
The Eagle Impact Rugby Academy U17s completed a two-game sweep of the British Columbia U17s with a 38-7 defeat of their hosts Saturday at the campus of the University of British Columbia.
EIRA U17s beat BC U17s 58-17 on Wednesday in a game that was impressive in terms of their ball movement, but also featured a couple of BC scores the tourists would have liked back.
"We probably got away with some stuff because we were dominating contact," EIRA U17s Coach Brendan Keane said about the first game. "And we were a bit lazy on the weak side and we didn't fix that process and they took advantage of it. But we told them to enjoy the game, enjoy cheering the other teams on, and then back to training."
The work, then, was on not giving up soft tries, and they did that, holding BC to just the one score.
It was a 0-0 game through most of the first quarter, and it wasn't until the 16th minute that center Jack Wendling (Chuckanut, Wash.) powered over for a try, converted by flyhalf Justin Petersen (Coastal Dragons). Petersen then added a penalty before Wendling got his second, which Petersen also converted to make it 17-0 at halftime.
Two minutes into the second half, Wendling completed his hat trick, and Petersen added the extras to make it 24-0. Royal Irish star David Hannon went over to make it 31-0 before BC finally got one on the board. Bailey Wilson, the flanker out of United in Utah, replied with a try. Petersen converted, and was a perfect 6-for-6 on kicks.
Wendling was superb and epitomized the way the EIRA team wanted to attack.
"We've got to earn the right to go wide," said Keane. "We wanted to hit outside 12 and outside 13, and then go wide. In the first game we kept trying to push it wide, and it was Jack who said 'nope' and deciding we're going to go up the midfield and free up space for others."
It worked out nicely, and the EIRA U17s leave BC 2-0, having scored 96 and given up 24.
