It's down to Sunday for the USA women to make the podium in the SVNS World Championships.

The Eagles have put aside a somewhat iffy performance in Hong Kong to make a charge to the top three.

With World Rugby 7s Player of the Year finalist, Ariana Ramsey, in excellent form, and World Rugby 7s Newcomer of the Year, Tahna Wilfley, making an impact, the Eagles started on fire against Great Britain in Friday's opener.

The one who was big for them in that game was New Yorker Su Adegoke, who combined elusiveness and strength in contact to score two. With Kristi Kirshe and Kaylan Canett providing that veteran connection, the quicker players, Ramsey, Erica Coulibaly, torched GB for tries.

The only blemish was an unfortunate tackle in the air by Sereana Vulaono, resulting in a red card for the youngster.

In a defensive battle with a tenacious Spain team, the Eagles had to work for it to get their second win.

Spain's power in the tackle, forcing the USA defense to clump up, led to a 10-0 lead for the Lions. And then with time up in the first half and nothing much going on, Eagle Kaylen Thomas skated wide, and turned the corner to go in from long range.

That turned the game around.

And yes Spain scored to make it 15-7, but the USA was in with a shout. Late in the match a long period of possession by the Americans fatigued the Spanish defense a bit, and this time Coulibaly cruised at an angle, and then burst through a gap.

Coulibaly had superb form and power in the run, and Spain had very little left.

Spain had the ball with less than a minute to go, but were penalized for sealing-off. The USA took the scrum at the middle of the field, and Ramsey, at scrumhalf, circled around the right side and was gone, showing why she has a chance at the top player in the circuit.

That was the ballgame, 19-15.

Saturday

In the standings, it's pretty straightforward. The USA went into Bordeaux 3rd in the standings (and not really close to moving up), leading Canada and France by two points (USA 30, Canada 28, France 28).

But both Canada and France came in with better points difference than the Americans, meaning a tie in points would go to the other. So the USA needs to finish higher than both Canada and France.

The first job there was Saturday morning in pool play against Canada. It would be better for the USA to win that game and have a higher seed into the quarterfinals.

And they did that. Kirshe, once again, took the team on her back when they needed it. This time she scored two tries in the first half to stake her side to a 14-12 lead at halftime. But the true heroics came late as Spiff Sedrick, Coulibaly, and Adegoke all scored in the space of a few minutes.

The USA's ability to get possession after having to kick off is a big part of their success of late.

The 33-22 win, in the end, didn't help the USA much. Canada got to face Fiji, while the Eagles got to play France.

USA-vs-France is always a battle and this one was, for sure. Determined to win the point of contact, something they don't always win against the French, the USA played gritty and angry. Stuck in their own end the Eagles did well to keep the ball before Sam Sullivan got the ball in space. Once again a team was too tired to respond, and Sullivan put everything into an 80-meter charge.

That try ended the first half, and the 5-0 lead would hold up until midway through the second half.

Again, stuck deep in their half, the USA broke through. This time Ramsey just did a little delay half sidestep and took off. Her ability to accelerate with confidence has been crucial. That made it 12-0, and the USA defense was superb to hold on.

Next Up ...

That win put France out of the conversation for 3rd in the standings. Canada, however, won well over Fiji. So the Canadians will face New Zealand and the USA will face Australia (who just barely escaped Spain).

These semis could decide those top four placements. If Australia beats the USA but Canada beats New Zealand, it's, in order: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA.

But if those results are reversed, then it's New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada.

And is Australia and New Zealand win the semis, then the final will be for the Series title, and the Bronze Medal match will be for the Bronze Medal overall.
