DSHA Faces Catholic Memorial for Wisconsin Girls Title
Divine Savior Holy Angels survived a bit of a scare against a much-improved Hamilton side to book a spot in this weekend's Wisconsin Girls Rugby state final.
DSHA fell behind early but fought their way back for their 21st state finals appearance, where they’ll face a familiar foe in Catholic Memorial HS.
DSHA opened the scoring early but a pair of tries in the first half gave Hamilton a tenuous lead for almost the entire game until sophomore Mary Foy snuck past the Hamilton defense after a well-placed kick down the sideline. Until that point, Hamilton’s defense had been excellent, holding up DSHA in-goal twice. Hamilton junior Rachel Rank had two tries in the game. DSHA moves on to the state final—they've never failed to play in one—and Hamilton will play in the 3rd-4th game, a title they won back in 2018.
CMH defeated Green Bay 67-0 in the rain. Green Bay was playing in their first 15s playoffs and CMH was looking to be in their 10th straight (11th overall) state final appearance. With the win, CMH will face DSHA for the 10th straight time in an attempt to win their team’s third state title. Green Bay will now play Hamilton for 3rd and will attempt to be the first team to finish as high as third in their first 15s season.
Stevens Point defeated Kettle Moraine 74-0, getting revenge after losing to Kettle Moraine in the state’s 3rd-place game in the last edition of the state tournament in 2019. Stevens Point moves on to the 5th place game against the Bruisers. Kettle Moraine will play DSHA B for the 7th place title.
Bruisers defeated DSHA B 22-5. The Bruisers couldn’t find their way past DSHA’s A-side earlier in the regular season, although it was a close match. They were able to find their way past the DSHA B side in sloppy match in the rain.
Madison defeated Hamilton 75-0 in a developmental game. Madison combined with Stevens Point to play a Hamilton side comprised mostly of underclassmen and a few upperclassmen new to rugby. Madison was able to use the game to tune-up for their 9th-place game against Muskego. Hamilton and SPASH used it to gain valuable game-time experience for their up-and-coming players.
