Dramatic Ending Friday Night in Connecticut

Fairfield Prep pulled out a last-second victory over Staples Friday night in Connecticut.

In a thrilling, back-and-forth game, the two teams tied twice (OK, three times because they started 0-0)—they were deadlocked at 10-10 and 17-17. Both teams got into penalty trouble and if they had been able to exploit that consistently one team might have been able to pull away. But neither team could win their lineouts on a consistent basis, so you'd see teams gain momentum only to see it regained by the opposition.

After that halftime 17-17 tie, Fairfield scored twice to take a 27-17 lead—Mason Beardsworth scored a try and Ben Cornelius converted and added a penalty. However, Staples, led by Kody Goldman and Eddie van der Merwe, stormed back, and a conversion from TT Bassler nudged them ahead 29-27.

With time winding down, Fairfield regained possession and earned a penalty. Cornelius, who had gone 5-for-5 in the game so far, put the kick through to put Prep ahead 30-29. There was time for one more play, but the Staples restart went into touch and that ended the game.

Also in Connecticut, Greenwich HS overcame Ridgefield 74-19.

This result sets up an imposing series of games with Rye HS in four days, then Fairfield Prep later in April, and Aspetuck
