Doylestown, GGA Win in Contrasting Rugby Pa Semis
Doylestown, GGA Win in Contrasting Rugby Pa Semis
It will be Doylestown vs Gregory the Great in the final of Rugby PA's Boys HS D1 championship after both teams won their semifinals on Saturday in Malvern, Pa.
The two semis could hardly have been more different.
Doylestown over West Allegheny
Doylestown put West Allegheny under constant pressure from the get-go in one semi. Using the hard-charging lock forwards Dan Boell and Gil Green, they punched down through the middle, and while they had support to hit the rucks, they also avoided getting too static by offloading constantly to runners coming from behind.
It worked, and West Allegheny was left scrambling. Doylestown scored quickly down the left side with the quick offloads and then did exactly the same thing, this time to get center Joe Mignon over.

Up 12-0 early Doylestown kept it up, and with scrumhalf Chris Cleland and flyhalf Dalton Reinheimer working the tempo nicely, they and continued to roll in the tries. Doylestown's continuity was impeccable. When they needed to run the rucks, they did it and their technique and physicality were excellent. When they wanted to play a little hot potato, there was usually someone there to grab the ball.
West Allegheny was able to get two tries in during the second half, but it was tough going for them as the pace of the Doylestown attack was just too much. Doylestown 53 West Allegheny 12.
GGA over St. Joe's
This rivalry between St Joseph's Prep and Gregory the Great Academy is a heated one and was exactly that this time. GGA took an early lead when they scored off a counterattack, using some good team play to get flyhalf Eli Ziglinski through on a nifty little run Ziglinski converted and then added a penalty goal, and with the wind at GGA's backs, St. Joe's looked to be in serious trouble.
But then GGA started committing penalties. They went through a long period when they gave up a penalty right near the St. Joe's tryline, and committed several more and ended up backed up right before their own tryline. St. Joe's finally got over and we had a ballgame on our hands.
St. Joe's stormed back and took the lead in the second half. But then GGA was able to get one back and with the game winding down it was 20-17 Gregory the Great.
So now we come to the final moments. St. Joe's marched their way down and were within a few meters of the tryline when a knock-on led to a scrum for GGA. They won the scrum and kicked to touch. St. Joe's took the lineout about 20 meters from the GGA line and set up the maul, but the GGA defense was superb, the maul went nowhere, and it was another scrum to GGA. Scrum ball won, and a kick deep but this time it stayed in the field of play and St. Joe's attacked.
With a couple of well-worked moves St. Joe's was soon right near the GGA line once more. Penalty right in front of the posts opened up the possibility of taking a shot at goal to tie the game. St. Joe's tapped quickly, but didn't get support to the ensuing ruck and GGA got a penalty for holding on.
Game over right? Not so fast. GGA tapped and then kicked to touch, but the ball skewed off near the tryline, and a St. Joe's player raced in to touch it down. But the rugby ball is a funny shape and bounced surprisingly high. The ball was knocked forward before it was touched down. No try, knock-on, ballgame over.
See the slowmo replay in the video below and you'll see the refs got it right.
Gregory the Great's defense was tenacious, and they will be vigilant in cutting off Doylestown's passing lanes, but Sunday's final will certainly be a final of contrasts.
