Down to Final Weekend for Deep South
With an impressive 66-0 shut out of Troy University, the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns are now in position to challenge for the Deep South conference title.
"We are finally getting better chemistry within the team," said Cajun player Rod Blouin. "We're starting to play more for each other."
They have received a late boost from Brennon Rami, a lock forward who is relatively new to the team and played in his second ULL game this past weekend, scoring a try. He ads some athleticism and power up front, and, as outlined in our Gamebreakers column, hooker Bret Goodell provided some much-needed poise and versatility. Meanwhile, Braxton Boothe has been very strong as a goalkicker, slotting eight of ten conversions on Saturday.
The wrinkle in ULL's season was their game against Spring Hill, which was rained out, and with no makeup date possible, the game is listed as a forfeit for both teams. That leaves the Cajuns at 3-2 with one game left, a game they need to win, against South Alabama.
Meanwhile, Spring Hill, after such a strong start tied Tulane and sit at 3-1-1 with one more game, against Southern Mississippi, also now a must-win.
Meanwhile, Tulane has somehow crept back into the picture despite winning only one out of four. That's because they've scored tries, earning bonus points, and tied twice. Tulane, too, is starting to get it together, and perhaps just in time. They also have a canceled game on thier schedule, against Troy, and that's a tough one for them not to have been able to play. Still, a win against Louisiana Tech puts them in the conversation. And if Southern Mississippi beats Spring Hill, which is entirely possible, we could be seeing a three-way tie for 2nd.
