DIAA Playoff Outlook
DIAA Playoff Outlook
March is almost half over and it’s time to start thinking about DIAA playoffs.
That’s right, even though it’s more than a month before we really start worrying about national playoffs, some scenarios are already clearing up. Here’s what we know:
East Bracket
Four teams will play off in the Ivy League Wild Card Tournament April 4-5. This playoff is needed because the Ivy League winners, Dartmouth, will be in the Varsity Cup only. Columbia finished 5th in the Ivy League, but opted to concentrate on 7s.
In the semis, Yale (2-5) plays Cornel (5-2) and Brown (4-3) plays Princeton (4-3). The tournament is held at Brown University.
South Independent
It’s not mathematically confirmed, but it looks like it’s Middle Tennessee State v Central Florida for the playoff spot. The semis will be held April 4 and the final April 5.
Keystone
West Virginia are the champions.
Empire
With Stony Brook playing 7s, the US Merchant Marine Academy will take the Empire seed.
So there are two teams from fall play confirmed, and eight teams still in the hunt for the other three.
West Bracket
In the Gold Coast, Cal State Long Beach has all but secured 1st, but there is a playoff in April, which means Santa Barbara City College, University of San Diego, and either Cal State Fullerton or USC are still within reach. However, given the scores of this season, CSULB and SBCC are your best bets.
In the Pacific West, six teams are still in it, since the league holds a final four April 11-12. UC Davis is on top, with Chico State close behind, but Nevada, Stanford, Sac State, and San Jose State are all in with a shot.
NCRC
Four teams play off April 4 and April 11. As in the Ivy League, the champions, Central Washington, will be in the Varsity Cup, and won’t participate. So it’s going to be Washington, Oregon, Western Washington, and Washington State, but not necessarily in that order.
Heart of America
It’s all down to this weekend with Arkansas at Missouri. The winner of that game will likely be the HOA champ, although it’s possible that if Missouri wins, Kansas State gets the seed.
So it’s still very much up in the air, with no team really secure (although Long Beach is definitely on a roll).
