DI Games to Watch
DI Games to Watch
Lots of great games are occuring in the women's DI college sphere this weekend, and here's a smattering of the ones worth following.
There are two attention-grabbers in the varsity league. American International College and Army face each other again, and only three points separated the teams in early September. All eyes will be on the teams’ relative improvements since then. The teams have two big playmakers that will heavily influence the outcome: Army's Nicole Heavirland and AIC's Anne-Laurence Harvey. Quinnipiac vs. Brown should be an interesting game but we’re inclined to favor the Bobcats. The Bears are coming off an 8-5 loss to Dartmouth, a team Quinnipiac beat 43-5. Emily Roskopf and Ilona Maher highlight the young talent propelling Quinnipiac forward, while Saskia Morgan is Brown's difference-maker.
Also in varsity, Norwich will look to rebuild some momentum against first-year varsity team Sacred Heart. The Cadets have dropped three-straight games by an average of 28 points. Notre Dame College hosts West Chester, which has struggled this season, as evidenced by its 45-0 loss to Life last weekend.
There are a couple of double-headers to target as well. Penn State heads west for Big Ten games against Michigan and Ohio State, and looks to build on its 75-7 league-opening win against Notre Dame last weekend. The Nittany Lions have the depth to pull off these back-to-back games and the leadership of players like Gabby Cantorna, Katie Mueller, and Hope Rogers to ensure the games move ahead fluidly. Lindenwood is back on the road as well, heading to UVA on Friday and North Carolina Sunday. While the Lady Lions’ two opponents are the region’s strongest DI teams, they have had nowhere near the build-up that Lindenwood has enjoyed, and it’s likely to play out on the pitch. The series will be another opportunity to work its depth, but watch for Mackenzie Hawkins, who was named Lindenwood Athletics' Player of the Week, to launch the backs, and Gio Cruz to anchor a mobile pack.
UConn leads the Northeast (4-0) and will look to extend its lead against UMass (1-1) this weekend. Both Boston College (2-1) and Boston University (1-2) have showed some promise in challenging the standings leader. Last weekend, the Terriers fell just short of the Huskies, losing 17-12 in the bonus-point loss. The Eagles lost to UConn 19-0 in the season-opener, but they’ve played some impressive games since then. The trio are favored in this weekend’s games: Boston University vs. Rhode Island (1-1), Boston College vs. Northeastern (0-4). Curious who's leading the league in scoring? Check out this well maintained document curated by conference commissioner Nick Hildebidle.
The great thing about the Ivy League is that past results don’t necessarily forecast what’s to come, but the Dartmouth vs. Princeton match will lend more insight into how close this conference is going to be. The Big Green upset Brown last weekend, and the Tigers are coming off a bonus-point loss to Harvard. Brown chose All American Kat Ramage as its Player of the Match, as the freshman's storming runs drew attention. Princeton's Jessica Lu will bring a lot of finishing speed and higher-level experience.
The same goes for the Southwest conference. Even though it’s small with only three teams, the league season always proves to be interesting. Texas set the tone with a 35-24 win over Texas Tech last weekend, and now Texas A&M enters the fray against Tech this weekend.
There are plenty of more games occurring through the Midwest, Mountain West, and Mason Dixon, and we’ll keep tabs on all of them. Stay tuned.
