Deep South Finals Day - Almost
The Louisiana/Deep South High School Rugby Championship Tournament was held at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans on an overcast day, and ultimately the weather had its influence on proceedings.
The day opened up with the Plate Division semifinals. In the first game Brother Martin Crusaders defeated Niceville, 34 -12, avenging a regular season loss to Niceville. Brother Martin was led by senior captain Sam Carcamo. The second Plate semi was won by Shreveport over West Jefferson 25 - 0.
The Cup Consolation match was won by St Paul's 12 - 0 in a game that was halted by lightning shortly into the second half. St Paul was able to score two tries in the opening half despite stout defense from the Barbarians, a club side located in New Orleans. The Barbarians had several scoring opportunities but were unable to convert field position into points. (Note - there is some discussion about whether this game will be replayed or the result will stand. As happened in Georgia, the Deep South did not have a rule on place on how to treat abandoned games. Further complicating matters is the fact that finals are coming up for the students. As far as Goff Rugby Report can see, it looks as if the result will stand because finding another time to play will be difficult.)
After the Cup Consolation match was halted, the weather deteriorated rapidly and the Cup Final game between Bayou Hurricanes and Jesuit was postponed until Thursday, May 5 at 6:00pm.
The weather cleared later in the day and the Plate Final between Brother Martin Crusaders and Shreveport was able to kick off at 7:00pm. The game was a hotly contested back and forth affair with Brother Martin scoring first to take the lead 7 -0. Shreveport scored late in the half when one of its players stripped a Brother Martin ball carrier in the ruck and ran 50 meters for a try. The conversion was good and Shreveport tied the score at 7-7.
Shortly thereafter Brother Martin's big prop, Victor Quinonez, made the play of the game for the Crusaders as he ran through numerous defenders refusing to be brought down and gave Brother Martin the lead at halftime 12-7. Brother Martin scored another try to go up 17 - 7, but the first-year Shreveport team wasn't through as it scored a converted try to narrow the lead to 17 -14. Brother Martin put the game away with a late score as it kicked to the corner and then scored a few phases after its successful lineout. Final 24 - 14.
