Davis Rolls to Pac West Title
UC Davis finished off their Pacific West Conference season with a nice, neat 10-0 record thanks to a 2-0 playoff weekend.
Davis was clinical in the extreme in downing Sacramento State on Saturday, and then dispatched Chico State 40-10 in a game many (such as Goff Rugby Report) thought would be much closer.
David was led by wing Brian Albin and scrumhalf Josh Campos, who both scored two tries, but it was more than that.
“We were really organized and came into the game knowing exactly what we wanted to do,” said Davis’s Seve Woods. “Our scrum dominated and because of that they couldn’t really get any attack going. We had a really good idea of what we needed to do against Chico State and it came together.”
It’s a big win for Davis because they are hosting the western half of the DIAA quarterfinals. It’s a lot more fun hosting if you’re playing in the playoff, too.
For the Aggies, the season has come a long way from their opening week 18-15 win over Chico. They have gone from strength to strength since then, with no opponent coming close to them (Stanford losing by 26 was the closest game aside from that opener). What Davis does is they combine power and pace with a knowledge of the game. They have players with longtime rugby experience, and that, combined with a long Pacific West schedule that gives teams time to improve, made all the difference.
