Davenport Lays Down 50 on Iowa Central
Davenport put in a strong result this weekend with a 55-31 defeat of Iowa Central Community College.
Iowa CCC was missing two key starters but that didn't completely tell the story of them giving up more than 50 points. In a game of two halves with the wind helping each team in turn, Davenport used the win better in the first half. Jono Kutzil scored two tries and the Panthers also got tries from Alex Null, Matt Kelly, Chipo Mupso, Dom Lamancusa, Ethan Howard, and Sam Vanderwest, with Mat Devilliers adding six conversions.
"I was proud of the boys for not getting down too far and making it interesting in the second half," said Iowa Central head Coach Brent Nelson. "At least we put up a good fight. The scouting report we gave the guys was about their phenomenal kickers. Well ... they were who we thought they were."
Davenport brought physical, strong ballcarriers to the game and, quoting Nelson here, their kickers were "masterful." Those kickers were, for the most part, Devilliers and Sean Nolan. Nolan, like Howard at No. 8, were part of the Back Bay HS club that won HS Nationals in 2019.
For the Tritons, there were lessons, of course.
"We didn't back down from a better team, and now we have two weeks until Arkansas State brings their A and B sides back here, so back to the drawing board," said Nelson.
