D1 and D2 Finalists Set for Connecticut
Fairfield Prep and Greenwich HS will meet up this coming weekend in the Connecticut D1 state final after both won semifinals.
Fairfield Prep beat Simsbury Trojans 69-14, paced by a brace of tries each from Tanner Langis and Ben Sheldon. Seven other Fairfield players touched down: Matt Mitchell, Mike Silk, Charles Dooley, Finn Murphy, Liam O'Hara, Emmet Derby, and Malachi Mercer-Robinson. Matt Mancini converted two and Nicolas Vittoria converted five.
Simsbury got tries from Andrew Kowal and Noah Herbeck witth Vincent Matteo converting both.
Greenwich, meanwhile, came off a 5th-place finish at the HS National Championships the weekend before to beat Staples 45-24 to advance to the final.
Greenwich has been relying on its senior leadership and once again they were solid, keeping the team on task.
"We are proud of our players who played four very hard games in a week," said Coach Michael Laczkowski. "Our senior captains led the way again. We were also able to get several players in that did not play at Nationals."
Fairfield and Greenwich will face off this weekend as part of Rugby Connecticut's finals day.
Staples HS will host.
There will be a froshmore tournament and also the D2 final.
Fairfield Rugby Club made the final after their semifinal opponents, Darien, forfeited. In the semifinal that was actually played, Midstate beat the West Hartford Black Hearts 19-7. Jeff Gonzalez scored two tries for Midstate and Nolan Kappas added a try and two conversions.
