Colorado Edges GCU
The University of Colorado defeated Grand Canyon in the opening game for GCU.
It's a bit of slow burn for the 'Lopes as they look at an independent D1A season this year, and getting 31 points on the board shows they have some attacking ability.
"Exciting game," said GCU Head Coach Sean O'Leary. "But too many mistakes from both sides. This is turning into a good rivalry."
Freshman flyhalf Luke Neely and freshman center Dylan Mercer, both out of Colorado Springs, showed well. Both Mercer and Neely helped the Rebel Rugby Academy win the NAI 7s this past summer.

But in the end penalties hurt Grand Canyon.
"We played well at times but seemed to force things too much," said Colorado Head Coach Chris Hanson. "We will take the win but the guys know the way we can play and will adjust for a big match coming up against CSU."
Leading the way for the Buffs was flyhalf Chas Bobrow, who was effective with his tactical kicking and leading the attack. In addition to all of that, Bobrow slotted five penalty goals and was 3-for-3 on conversions for 21 points with the boot.
Up front loosehead prop Trevor Barrios was a powerhouse, running hard and making big tackles as he provided an emotional jolt to the team.
But overall, said Hanson, "we did have too mny mistakes. GCU is good team and if you make mistakes they will punish you."
CU looks ahead to Colorado State, while GCU looks to Arizona State and then the West Coast 7s before pursuing an independent D1A schedule in the winter/spring.
