College Sevens Update: ICCC Keeps Going
Iowa Central CC beat Wheeling 21-17 to win the Fighting Irish Invitational 7s at Notre Dame this weekend.
Both teams had to work their way through some tough competition. Wheeling beat Adrian, Marian, and Kutztown to make the final, while Iowa CCC worked their way through Michigan, Notre Dame, and Indiana. Almost all the games were very close. Kutztown beat Indiana to take 3rd, while Walsh beat Notre Dame 22-10 for 5th.
Takudzwa Musingwini was named player of the tournament.
Louisville beat Illinois in the D1 Club bracket.
This was an automatic CRC qualifier for both divisions, but Iowa CCC has already secured a place at the NCR championship tournament April 29.
Queens and Virginia Tech went 2-0 in the Sandman 7s at VT, but in the knockout rounds, Virginia Tech lost to NC State, which had gone 1-0-1 in pool play, tying Kentucky. Queens went on to win this tournament 31-0. This was also an automatic qualifier.
On the women's side, St. Bonaventure hosted an automatic qualifier that welcomes just three teams: Bonnies, Walsh, and Wheeling. Wheeling beat both St. Bonaventure (25-5) and Walsh (33-5) and then beat St. Bonaventure again in the final 31-17.
Over last weekend, three teams clinched berths in the 2025 Collegiate Rugby Championship Premier Cup.
Last year's champions, Brown, became the second team in the women’s division to secure a bid, joining AIC. The back-to-back champs stormed through their first three games to reach the finals of their home tournament, putting up a combined score of 142-0 versus Roger Williams, Northeastern, and New Haven. In the championship, they met AIC, where they clinched a CRC bid, winning 28-19. Genie Dicks scored 38 points for the champions throughout the tournament, slotting 14 conversions. Olivia Baptiste led the team in tries with six. Nikki Lynch added five tries on the day, while Lily Nowak and Akilah Cathey put down three each.

The City 7s in Kansas City saw Iowa Central Community College win their second qualifier, putting up another strong performance before heading to the CRCs. The Tritons dominated in pool play, beating Central 42-5 and UHSP 48-7. This led to a semifinal match with Adrian, where they narrowly won 17-14. After a close call in the semis, ICCC turned it back up again in the finals, defeating Principia 28-0.

Belmont Abbey also clinched a berth in this year’s CRC, winning Ruck the Rock 7s in South Carolina. Following a 2-1 record, Belmont Abbey won their pool and advanced to the semifinals, capturing wins against Clemson and South Carolina. Clemson finished second to also make the semis, joined by Walsh and Kutztown from the other pool. The Crusaders defeated Kutztown, last year's runner-up at the CRCs, 15-14 to match up with Walsh in the finals. There, they won another nailbiter 19-14, winning their way to an automatic bid. Belmont Abbey and Iowa Central join Brown and Wheeling as the only qualified teams for the men’s Premier Cup.
