Upsets

This model hedges its bets and real change, upward or downward, requires multiple results. The major exception to the rule is upsets. There were three key upsets that had a big impact in Week 5: Colorado over Grand Canyon, Sam Houston over Texas A&M, and Indiana over Notre Dame College.

You’d be right to point out that last week, Indiana was ranked three spots ahead of Notre Dame College. However, the Index does give teams a bump when playing at home. That’s why lower-ranked NDC went in as favorites and the away win counted as an upset for the Hoosiers.

Need More Data

This week, we got enough info to add three more teams to the Top 40: Queens, Tennessee, and Mount St. Mary’s. We have three more teams we think are in the Top 40 but still need more data on before we are confident ranking: Dartmouth, Iowa Central, and St. Joseph’s. This week the Tritons host Davenport which will be useful in determining their standing in the Index. An upset win over Army would give us a better picture of Dartmouth as well.

Who’s In, Who’s Out

Notre Dame returns to the Top 40 with a big win over Cincinnati. With upcoming matches against Ohio State, Bowling Green, Davenport, and Indiana, a win streak could launch the Irish up in the rankings.

Making way for Notre Dame and the three new additions are Fordham (Inactive), North Texas (Inactive), Wisconsin (Close Loss vs Michigan), and UMass (Close Loss vs Tufts).
