Close Games Across the Board in NorCal Premier Season

The RugbyNorCal Premier Varsity league wrapped up its regular season with three games, all competitive.

Marin improved to 2-4 with a 26-13 victory over Motherlode. And while Motherlode was winless this season, they didn't shy away from playing any of their opponents and pitched-up every time.

De La Salle edged Granite Bay 33-29 thanks to tries from Tyler Holmberg, Brayden Park, Lee Vaouli, and Harrison Kapust. With the score 26-19 for DLS, Granite Bay got tries form Talan Fairbanks and Owen Januario to nudge the Grizzlies ahead 29-26. However, with time winding down Kapust was able to score with Gianluca Deneroff converting to seal the game.

That result left DLS undefeated at 5-0, however, their game with SFGG was never played, and as a result Granite Bay, with a 5-1 record and more bonus points, is actually in 1st place.

SFGG, meanwhile, improved to 4-1 with an impressive 31-15 win over Danville.

"The boys are way more disciplined on defense and playing better field position with good ball retention, and still playing open rugby," said Head Coach Tony Wells. "We feel great about the program and the JV team has gone undefeated."

We're not quite sure how the playoff matchups will be decided, but the logical thing would be to have DLS (undefeated by #2) play SFGG (#3) and Granite Bay play Danville. However, it's possible that DLS-SFGG game might be worked in as a forfeit.

The Oaks have played four games decided by a try or less, losing two of them, including a 14-12 decision to De La Salle a week ago. So even though they are 2-4, their points difference is actually in the positive.

In the 20 games played in this league, eight, or 40%, were decided by a try or less, which is a very large percentage (20% is considered a lot). The average score was 32-15.
