Chapel Hill, Charlotte Catholic, Continue Winning Ways
Charlotte Catholic and the Chapel Hill Highlanders continued on their winning ways in North Carolina.
Catholic defeated the Hough Huskies 57-0 and remain undefeated in the Single-School league where Myers Park sits 7-1 and atop the division.
The Highlanders, too, are unbeaten, and recorded a 47-7 defeat of the North Meck Vikings to go 4-0.
“Our backline is firing on all cylinders,” enthused Chapel Hill Coach Robert Joseph, whose team had to contend with a small field and plenty of wind against North Meck, but still attacked nicely.
“We are moving in the right direction,” said Joseph. “We are still figuring out some key positions - we have the luxury this year of having 3 capable scrumhalves and a couple of flyhalves too.”
Joseph moved one wing to flanker, and has found a capable fullback in sophomore Emmanuel Seyon, a tough tackler who can run, and in the last two games has given the team a spark.
Joseph said he also pleased with his team’s defense. North Meck got over the line only after the subs came on (like a lot of HS leagues, in North Carolina, when a lopsided game reaches a certain point, it turns into a more development status, and the subs bench is opened up).
“Not letting them score was important,” added Joseph.
Charlotte Catholic, meanwhile, may not have as deep a roster as previous years, but the players they have are doing well.
Reid Brandt was moved to inside center mid-season and he scored four tries against Hough.
“We continue to mesh as a unit,” said Coach Ian Mueller. Next up for Charlotte Catholic is the Jesuit Rugby Classic, which Mueller said is “a serious test. But we hope to hold our own against the larger clubs.”
