Championship Matchups Decided in NIRA
The NIRA finals matchups are confirmed after all the semifinals this week.
DI Dartmouth vs Harvard
Dartmouth defeated Quinnipiac 47-14 to remain undefeated, make the final, and be playing when they host the final.
Seven different players scored for the Big Green and they scored all kinds of ways, individual brilliance, working it through the hands, chasing down kicks, and just plain hard work. Ava Proctor, Simone Bautista, Lauren Ferridge, Ariana Ramsey, Sophie Ragg, Sadie Schier, and Nicole Ihensekhien crossed the tryline on the day.
"We knew it would be a challenge, but we stuck to our gameplan," senior Kristin Bitter, who slotted six conversions, told KyleRelf. "We know we have the ability to go all the way and this is one step in doing that."
Harvard exacted revenge for a close loss to Army two weeks ago with a rather emphatic 41-24 victory over the Black Knights. Army led early but Alex Pipkin's score tied it up. Brogan Mior's nice finish put the Crimson ahead and Carmon Field made it 19-7 at the break. Tiahna Padilla, freshman sensation Lennox London, Chloe Headliand on an interception, and then Fields again capped it off.
DII Queens vs Davenport
Etched into the memory of the Queens University Charlotte team is their 22-20 loss to AIC in the DII semifinals last year, and how AIC went on to take the national title. This time around, it was Queens that won, taking a 22-12 decision from the YellowJackets.
"The ultimate motivation our team needed for semis was to have a match-up against AIC, who was the opponent from last year's unsuccessful semifinal match," said Queens Head Women's Rugby Coach Dana Meschisi. "AIC is a tactically sound team with amazing athletes that just tested us defensively for 80 minutes."
The teams were tied 7-7 at halftime—Lea Pruss scored first for Queens, with Maddie Hughes converting, AIC would respond and then take the lead early in the second half before tries from Maggie Sweeney and Allle English put Queens ahead to stay. Hughes. converted one of those tries and added a penalty to make it a two-score game and ice it.
"Our team has been building every single match and chipping away at every training session leading up to playoffs," Meschisi said. "Being grateful is an understatement, as I've had the great pleasure of leading these young players, on and off the field towards their goal of making it to NIRA Finals. The transition the team has made this year has been 100% player driven. Our team's success is an accumulation of the hard work from not only the players, but coaches, alumni, families, and friends throughout the season."
Queens will face Davenport, in its first year as a NIRA side. The Panthers put West Chester to the sword to win going away and move to 7-0.
DIII Bowdoin vs University of New England
Defending DIII champs Bowdoin are back in the final after beating Castleton 56-8. Rebecca Vakarau, the MVP of the 2021 DIII final when she was just a freshman, opened the scoring while LuLu Linkas scored three tries, two in quick succession to start the onslaught. Vakarau got a second and Len Dodge was huge on defense.
Bowdoin will take on a resurgent University of New England side that slammed Norwich 75-27 to make the championship game. MacKenzie Burke and Liz Cogan combined for eight of UNE's 11 tries as the Cadets had few answers for the Nor'easters.
Salma Bezzat made sure the tries counted, converting 10 out of UNE's 11 tries.
Finals Day
November 19 at Hanover, NH all three championships will be decided. The games will be live-streamed and will be played at Dartmouth's soccer stadium to accommodate more fans.
