Camaraderie Focus of Rainier Spring Fling
Camaraderie Focus of Rainier Spring Fling
The Rainier Plateau rugby program is hosting a rugby festival in East Bonney Lake, Wash., and it's an interesting format in that the purpose isn't to crown a winner, but just to enjoy the game.
The festival is for girls teams and is modeled after events that tournament organizer Andy Ramsay has seen in Canada.
"There are no finals, no winners or medals," said Ramsay. "It's more a celebration of being part of girls youth rugby and relaxing from wins and losses and having a good time."
Teams that have signed up so far:
Kent (Wash.)
Rainier (Wash.)
Shelton (Wash.)
Valley Panthers (Ore.)
Beaverton Barbarians (Ore.)
Shawnigan Lake School (BC)
There is possibly room for more.
"The focus and intent of this Festival is to celebrate the camaraderie and fellowship of youth rugby," said Ramsay. "We want to provide a reminder that kids are playing this game because it's fun and unique."
To emphasize that concept the festival includes a dinner at the conclusion of play on Saturday. The tables for the meals will not be organized by team, but rather by position. All props, from whatever team they play on, will sit together.
The Rainier Plateau Spring Fling is March 28-29 in Bonney Lake, Wash.
