California Conference Latest: UCSB and GCU Win

UCSB center Diego Lopez Periel goes airborne to score.

UC Santa Barbara logged their first California Conference game since landing new Head Coach Neil Foote, and came away with a 36-12 win over UC Davis.

UCSB has already played, losing to Cal, and then last week's game against San Diego State was called off. Foote was pleased to see what his team has learned since that Cal game.

"We have a fantastic group of young men who have bought into a team culture and want to express themselves on a rugby field," said Foote. "We had some terrific ball movement across the field and kept the ball alive. We can still get better at composing ourselves a little more and understanding that sometimes better options are just simple acts of carrying into contact with support and recycling ball."

The Gauchos defense was perhaps the big story and Foote said there's a combination of understanding what they need to do and then also working hard.

"We learned from Cal that so much can be achieved when everyone knows their roles and does it the best that they can," said Foote. "They taught us that if a team is consistent in there actions and has intent in everything they do then that makes a team relentless and hard to stop. We left a footprint today that made us realize that we are on the right track even though we have lots of improvement in us still. It was a really good shift from the lads and one that made me feel proud of their effort and especially the way they carried themselves."

Also victorious was Grand Canyon. It was a good offensive showing by the 'Lopes but Head Coach Sean O'Leary was quick to say Santa Clara tested them.

"We loved hosting Paul Keeler, Moses Molou, and their team," said O'Leary. "Now the race to recovery starts for us to prepare for a dominating Cal team."

Not a conference game, but a key litmus test, Cal, which hung 90 on Arizona on Saturday, stays in the state to play GCU on Monday.

Cal Poly vs San Diego State was called off due to the tragic death of one of the SDSU players—Max Tamulonis died in a hiking accident and the team is in mourning.

With Saturday's victory Grand Canyon now leads the California Conference with a 3-0 record. Saint Mary's did not play a conference game, instead playing a dramatic tilt against UCLA.
