Cal racked up 12 first-half tries before Utah could score on Saturday, then added four more second-half scores to defeat the Utes, 92-12, on Witter Rugby Field.
 
Sophomore fullback Troy Lockyear recorded five tries in the first 40 minutes and freshman scrumhalf Keanu Andrade had a hat trick in the PAC Rugby Conference matchup against Utah. The Utes got one try at the end of each half from No. 8 Gabe Ruflin and No. 2 Chad Gough, respectively, the former converted by Eric Call (1-of-2).
 
A total of eight Golden Bears found the try zone Saturday as Cal (7-0, 2-0 PAC) dominated the Utes (1-2, 0-1 PAC). Utah took the opening kickoff and looked capable in successive phases before Drew Gaffney spoiled a recycle, Lockyear finished the 80-meter counterattack and the floodgates were open.
 
"It was all the others creating space for me," said Lockyear, one of three sophomores to get starting nods on Saturday. He credited a good week of training and cited Andrade's play at No. 9 among the positive performances on the day, adding, "Keanu did a great job to control the forwards, working some passes and scoring some tries. I think we all went through our systems really well."
 
"The second half was a little sloppier but as a whole we played as a unit, forwards and backs," offered Andrade, one of two freshmen to start Saturday along with Sam Cusano. Andrade credited flyhalf and captain Russell Webb for helping to make the most out of each possession. "Playing with Russell Webb is great," Andrade said. "I can get it to him and he makes the magic happen."
 
Head coach Jack Clark said his squad "played a really accurate first 40 minutes, when we looked after the ball and demonstrated some solid skills. The second 40 minutes were patchy, less skillful for sure."

Prior to Saturday's action, a moment of silence was observed at Witter Rugby Field for of Tel Cary-Sadler '01, who died unexpectedly in November. The three-time national champion for the Bears was the founder of an Oakland law practice in his name after graduating from Harvard Law School in 2004. The Blue and Gold also wore black armbands in his memory.
 
The Bears will play their next two matches on the road, starting in Vallejo at Cal Maritime on Wednesday, February 1, at 7 p.m., followed by a trip to Santa Clara to face the Broncos at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 4. Cal returns home for a February 11 doubleheader against Arizona State at 12 p.m. and Cal Poly at 2 p.m. on Witter Rugby Field.
